Call for Art Submissions: Barton Street Decorative Crosswalk

 

The Barton Village Business Improvement Area (BIA), in partnership with the Ward 3 Councillor's Office, is seeking submissions from local artists to design a decorative crosswalk artwork that will be installed on Barton Street East at Emerald Street North.

This initiative aims to beautify the neighbourhood, celebrate local creativity, and enhance pedestrian spaces with vibrant, meaningful art.

Project Details:

  • Location: Barton Street East, at Emerald Street North 

  • Installation: Artwork will be installed by the City of Hamilton Public Works

  • Dimensions: 3m x 11m [10ft x 36ft] 

 

Design Requirements:

All submitted designs must meet the following specifications:

  • Artwork must fit between the two standard white transverse lines of the crosswalk, and must not extend onto the sidewalk or outside the roadway boundaries.

  • Designs should have strong visual contrast to enhance visibility.

  • Designs must be appropriate for public display and must not contain:

    • Commercial advertisements or logos (unless granted explicit permission).

    • Copyrighted material without written permission.

    • Interactive elements like hopscotch or games.

    • Any elements that could mislead or confuse pedestrians, especially those who are visually impaired.

  • Designs must comply with the City of Hamilton's Art in Public Places Policy 

  • The operational lifespan of durable pavement markings is approximately 5 years. Decorative crosswalks must be installed by the City of Hamilton. Artwork design shall be reasonable, easily reproduced and installed.

What Artists Will Receive:

  • $1,000 artist fee for the selected design

  • Public recognition via BIA communications and signage

  • All production and installation costs covered by Ward 3 and the City of Hamilton

  • Installation by the City of Hamilton

How to Submit Your Artwork:

Submission guidelines:

  • Submit a high-resolution PNG or JPG file of your artwork.

  • Files can be fully rendered or sketched, but should be clear and suitable for public review.

  • Name your file using this format: Firstname_Lastname_Title.jpg

  • Optional: Include a brief description or inspiration behind your design (max 250 words).

 

Selection Process:

  • Submissions will be reviewed by the Barton Village BIA Board of Directors and voted on by the public during a Community Engagement Session on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

  • The final selected artist may be asked to make up to two revisions to their design to accommodate formatting or installation needs.

Barton Village BIA is situated upon the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.
