Hands On Barton
Pilot Project June - November 2026

What is Hands On Barton?
Hands on Barton is a community-driven pilot project that bridges the gap between local businesses, property owners, and the resource-deprived residents of Barton Village. The initiative pairs cleanup and beautification needs — submitted directly by businesses and property owners along Barton Street East — with willing participants served by area social service agencies, shelters, and community organizations.
The Barton Village BIA will act as the coordinating body: gathering job requests, matching them with participants, supplying tools and materials, and tracking outcomes. More than a cleanup program, Hands on Barton is about belonging. It creates meaningful community connections, offers participants a tangible way to contribute to the neighbourhood they call home, and demonstrates to the broader Hamilton community that Barton Village is a place where everyone is valued and has a role to play.
Where did the idea come from?
Despite the energy and character that define Barton Village, the area faces two interconnected challenges:
1. Physical upkeep and beautification gaps. High vacancy rates along the street, coupled with limited capacity among individual business and property owners, mean that cleanup and beautification efforts are uneven. Litter, overgrown plantings, dirty storefronts, and cluttered sidewalks affect the perception of the neighbourhood and deter new investment and foot traffic.
2. Social disconnection. Barton Village is home to a significant number of individuals experiencing housing instability, poverty, or social isolation — many of whom are served by local social service agencies, shelters, and community organizations in and around the area. While these individuals share the street with business owners and long-time residents, few formal structures exist to bring these groups together in a spirit of mutual contribution and respect.
Hands on Barton recognizes that the solution to both challenges may, in fact, be the same. By inviting participants from social service networks to take on structured, meaningful cleanup and beautification tasks — organized and resourced by the BIA — this project creates:
-
A cleaner, more welcoming streetscape that benefits everyone
-
A structured pathway for community members to contribute meaningfully and build a sense of belonging
-
Stronger relationships between businesses, property owners, and the broader community
-
A model that demonstrates the power of inclusion and collaboration in neighbourhood revitalization
This project aligns directly with the BIA’s existing mandate — beautification, community engagement, and business attraction — while extending its impact in a direction that reflects the values of the Barton Village community.
